Connect Multidimensional to SQL Server Standard License
With the removal of the connection to SQL Server Standard License (worked with the first preview) the potentials to a lot of Power BI users is out. The entire SME business is left out to use this feature although you can still use the connection through Excel and Pivot. Ideal would be to be moved this license restriction to Power BI Pro account instead of the free version.

- nishalitNew MemberThank you for your suggestion. As you may have seen, with SQL Server 2016 SSAS now enables DAX queries for multi-dimensional models even in standard edition. Closing as the team has completed this work!
- whamptonNew MemberAbsolutley agree with Raz! By only allowing the connector to work with an Enterprise license makes the whole SSAS and PowerBI unaffordable for many businesses. This seems to be a common Microsoft approach, give with one hand and take with the other.
- kaarel2New MemberThis doesn't make any sense for SME-s. MD + PowerBI should be part of a SQL Standard Licence like MD SSAS has always been.
- ehuggzNew MemberMost importantly, the switch to require SQL Enterprise came as an unexpected and unpleasant surprise in the middle of ongoing projects. We have been developing PowerBI based solutions and testing with pre-release OLAP connectivity and looking forward to production implementations. The SQL BI/Enterprise requirements just prior to release is an unwelcome conversation as we near final stages of the project.s
- fbcideas_migusrNew MemberWhich preview? Enterprise Gateway or other? DAXMD is required to Power BI and afaik, DAXMD was only in Business Intelligence and Enterprise licenses. What is the mix that was working?
- raheleNew MemberMicrosoft should have features to remove this license restrictions instead in order to not ignore enormous standard's users. We are looking forward to hearing from you the possibility to connect with standard version, thanks.
- jeborNew MemberTotally aggree that this should be SE license since both SSAS MD and Power BI does not require EE - why should the combination ? This seems just accidential due to DAXMD being part of Tabular and therefore EE.
- palsomNew MemberPls think Std Edition customers also.
- kdelmoteyFrequent VisitorMarc Russo is right, i dont understand what worked before that is not working anymore. DAX-MD is not supported in Standard Edition
- GvARegular VisitorPlease unlock the SSAS (multidimenstional) power for SQL server standard!
