Better Date Range filters

The timeline slicer (Custom Visualization) functions, but it is not a friendly tool. If I quickly want to select a "Start" and "End" date for a date range, it would be more helpful to have a popup calendar with an optional freeform text box for both the "Start" and "End" date ranges.

Nope. We need a calendar to be able to select a single date. Nothing I've tried in PBI visuals lets me do that. Don't throw the drop down at me until you scroll through 12 years of single dates to find the one you want. I can't even resort the drop down to at least give me the last date first.
