The Need • Often there are lots of columns to choose from. • Sometimes, there is no header row which makes column names indistinguishable • Even if there are column names, these are often cryptic or abbreviated or ambiguous or similar • All columns cannot be seen visually in the available screen width • The Choose Columns dialog is modal making scrolling of the underlying window impossible • This requires lot of trial and error choose the columns you are sure about, Click Ok, Scroll and check more columns, invoke the dialog again, and so on. Suggested Solution The Choose Columns dialog is a check-list. In order to select / deselect any item you must click on it. During this mouse hover event, show a small tooltip which displays first few rows of the data from the column. This will be of immense help in selecting the right columns with minimal effort.
