I want to track Power BI report usage in my organization as part of my governance intiative. I went through the Get Activity Events API and filtering on the ViewReport activity type. On paper, it gets us part of the way: we can see report views over a 28-day window and derive counts via aggregation. But there are a few significant trade-offs:
- The endpoint is throttled (200 req/hour), which makes it hard to use across large tenants with hundreds of workspaces and reports
- The API only surfaces 28 days of historical data, so we'd need some background syncing to preserve a rolling popularity score.
- This isn’t 1 raw metadata field. It is derived usage metadata and requires deduplicating views, and applying business logic to calculate a meaningful score.
I'm requesting that report usage metadata be added to the Scanner APIs so that I have a more concise method to get this data.
Please let me know if there are other APIs that I should investigate to gather report usage metadata instead. Thanks!
