custom object / properties / automatically resetting to default

I'm trying to figure out why custom object properties that I've added using capabilities.json are effectively read-only.

Selection options render properly and can be changed, but they flip back.

Text field changes undo automatically.

I'm not seeing "update" method being called after property changes.  When update is called, I'm finding data views empty.

        public update(options: VisualUpdateOptions): void {
            console.log('Visual update', options);
            console.log('Edit mode', options.editMode || 0);
            //debugger;
            if (!options ||
                !options.type ||
                !options.viewport ||
                !options.dataViews ||
                options.dataViews.length === 0 ||
                !options.dataViews[0]) {
                console.log("Incomplete update, not processing.")
                return;
            }
            console.log("Processing update.")
            this.onResizing(options.viewport);
            //used for testing differences...
            const existingDataView = this.dataView;
            this.dataView = options.dataViews[0];
            this.visualSettings = VisualSettings.parse<VisualSettings>(this.dataView);
            this.viewPortHeight = options.viewport.height;
            this.viewPortWidth = options.viewport.width;

After adding a "categorical" dataViewMapping for my categorical dataRole the formatting properties started behaving properly.
