In the company I work for, we are planning to create our own Custom connector to allow our clients create reports with data extracted from one of our products and visualize it in Power BI SaaS.
But we still having some questions about the distribution channels for custom connectors and I would like your comments and opinions about my current discoveries based on the little research I have made looking in the documentation pages and some internet search.
So, once you have a usable custom connector, you have two ways to distribute it:
- We as company/developer are in charge of distribute and maintain the connector and bring support to the users, and from the user perspective, the user/IT representative is in charge to install the connector, therefore for every Power BI installation the user/IT needs to adjust the Security > Data Extension setup to “Allow any extension to load without validation or warning”.
- Try to certify the Custom connector in orders to be included in the next release of Power BI new version. (Putting aside the requirements, we can just assume we comply the requirements and the bureaucracy)
So, are these two the only “official” ways to distribute a connector or is there any other like a connectors “app-store-like”?
