Waterfall with Opening and Closing Balance

Hello friends,

Currently the Waterfall chart shows one measure by categories.

I need to show waterfall with Opening Balance column, then Changes Measure by categories, and finally the Closing Balance.

Like the one in the attached picture.

Any ideas how to do this in Power BI?

Thank you

Michael

@Cubist Thanks,

The Opening Balance you've added to the left is not good:

1. The bar next to it (-400K) shoud start at the top of BOP (230K) and not 0

2. The EOP should give the actual EOP and not the Delta

So I understand that the solution is to build my own visual or to hire you 🙂

Hi @Anonymous,

There are two solutions:

  1) Hire us to create a custom visual to do anything you want 🙂

  2) You can use a workaround like this below.  In this example, I've added an additional vertical bar chart to the left of the waterfall to show the starting value.

Sure, I was just giving an example but you could make it work like that.  There are a lot of creative ways to combine visuals into a single composite that will appear perfect to users.

Hi @Anonymous,

The waterfall chart is not suitable for your scenario, you would need to consider to use other type of visuals. A waterfall chart shows a running total as values are added or subtracted.

The Waterfall chart cannot show a Series, such as Territory or Product, it is limited to one value only. It does not allow superimposing of a line with a secondary Y axis that shares the same X axis. For more details about when to use waterfall chart, please review this blog.
