Issue:
The issue that we are facing is:
We understand that when creating a data source in Power BI to connect an on-premises Tabular Model, the account that is used to set up the data source should have 'Server Admin' rights on the Tabular Model.
From Microsoft:
" If the underlying error message is similar to the following, this means that the account you are using for the data source is not a server admin for that Analysis Services instance. Learn more
The 'CONTOSO\account' value of the 'EffectiveUserName' XML for Analysis property is not valid. "

Question:
Is this advisable?
Can an account, which is used to create data sources(the only purpose of is to read data from the data source), be given server admin rights on the Analysis Services Server.
We are going to get more clarification from Microsoft, but has anyone come across this?
I dont think DBA/ IT Security resources usually approve this architecture.
Any thoughts people?

When configuring Gateway for SSAS data source, the Windows account you enter must have Server Administrator permissions for the instance you are connecting to. Please refer to the Note in doc below:
Manage your data source - Analysis Services
Reagards,
Thank You!!!
Yes we ended up requesting the accounts to be admins.
Cheers
