Troubleshooting LLM Chatbot Custom Visual in Power BI

Hello,

Hope you are doing well,
I am facing issues using the LLM Chatbot custom visual in Power BI. Even after setting everything up correctly, it gives errors like:

  • "There was an error while trying to retrieve the schema"

  • "Unable to access the data due to an authorization issue"

I have configured everything correctly in the Format View under the Dataset option while using the LLM Chatbot custom visual in Power BI.

However, even after completing the configuration, I am still not receiving any answers from the Power BI dataset.

If anyone has successfully implemented and used this visual,

please share the solution or any guidance.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi @jesikamaurya,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

The issue with the LLM Chatbot custom visual is typically caused by either missing metadata access or incorrect dataset binding. Please try the following steps:

  • In the visualizations pane, under Format --> Dataset, make sure the correct dataset is selected, also confirm that the tables and columns you want to query are visible in the Fields pane.
  • The LLM Chatbot custom visual may require explicit permissions, go to Power BI Admin Portal under Tenant Settings enable ‘Allow visuals to access enhanced metadata’, ‘Allow users to use custom visuals from AppSource’.
  • Ensure the user running the report has Build permissions on the dataset.
  • Try testing with a basic dataset like a simple excel file with 2–3 columns to verify schema access. So that we can know whether the issue is with the dataset or the visual.
