Providing Power BI Dashboard Authoring Access To A AppSource Semantic Power BI Model

If we provide a Power BI App in AppSource to protect the Semantic Model IP, can we allow customers to develop their own Dashboards by connecting to our AppSource model ? If so, How ?

Power BI Desktop and / or Power BI Service options would work for us.

Any help much appreciated

Paul

By publishing your dataset to the Power BI Service and sharing it with your customers, you allow them to connect to the dataset and create their own dashboards and reports. The key is having the dataset shared with those specific customers that need to create their own content.

Power BI Service:

  1. Publish Your Dataset to Power BI Service:

    • Publish your dataset to the Power BI Service from Power BI Desktop.
  2. Create an App in Power BI Service:

    • In the Power BI Service, create an app that includes your dataset.
    • Go to the workspace where your dataset is published.
    • Click on "Create app" and follow the steps to publish your app to AppSource.
  3. Share the Dataset:

    • Ensure that the dataset is shared with the users who will be developing their own dashboards.
    • Go to the dataset in the workspace, click on the ellipsis (...), and select "Manage permissions."
    • Add the users or groups who need access to the dataset.
  4. Allow Users to Connect to the Dataset:

    • Users can connect to the dataset from Power BI Service by going to "Get Data" > "Power BI datasets" and selecting your dataset.
    • They can then create their own reports and dashboards using the shared dataset.

Power BI Desktop

  1. Provide Access to the Dataset:

    • Ensure that the dataset is accessible to the users in the Power BI Service as described above.
  2. Connect to the Dataset from Power BI Desktop:

    • Users can open Power BI Desktop and connect to the dataset by selecting "Get Data" > "Power BI datasets."
    • They will see a list of available datasets, including the one you published to the Power BI Service.
    • They can select your dataset and start building their own reports and dashboards.
