I have been developing a Power BI project using embed for your customers (app owns data). I chose an A1 capacity so that I can turn on and pause the capacity during development. I had researched that for production I could use either A or P sku's to support embed for your customers. I chose A while in development to keep the cost down with the pay-as-you-go feature.
Now that Fabric has been announced, can I use Fabric capacity for my Power BI embed for your customers (app owns data) project? I'm getting confused as to what can and can't be used as backed capacity for this type of project. I like the pay-as-you-go and Direct Lake Mode features of Fabric but saw the below table at Microsoft Fabric licenses - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn
Power BI Premium Per Capacity (P SKUs) | Create Power BI content. Share, collaborate on, and distribute Power BI and Microsoft Fabric content. To create workspaces and share content you need a Pro or PPU license. To view content, you can use a Free license. | Yes
|
Power BI Embedded Capacity Azure (A SKUs) | Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and developers use Power BI Embedded to embed visuals and analytics in their applications. | No |
Can anyone clarify which capacity SKU's can be used for an embed for your customers (app owns data) Power BI project?
Thank You
I'd be interested to know about this as well. I also read that article on Fabric and Embedded, plus the license page it linked to. On there it states "SKUs that are smaller than F64 require a Pro license to consume Power BI content.", so perhaps this is the issue you're facing? I'm currently using the A1 SKU and wouldn't be particularly happy to have to pay 8x as much as I do currently (assuming the same scaling as on that page).
Unless someone from Microsoft can provide instructions, it appears we would need the F sku to have Fabric and then if we want to embed Power BI reports for customers (app owns data) we will need to also pay for an A sku.
While I like some of the enhancements with Fabric, I'm not willing to pay for two sku's. I will continue with my Pro license and an A sku with Azure.
I hope Microsoft will be more specific with instructions, but in the meantime I don't think those of using Power BI Embedded A sku will be using Fabric.
Power BI Embedded with Microsoft Fabric
This article doesn't explicitly say you can use App Owns Data with the new F SKU, but it does say you can maintain your embedded applications and PowerBi REST API.
EDIT:
I just tried moving one of my workspaces to my Fabric trial capacity, and the App Owns Data embedded content stops working. Hopefully this is a restriction on the trial capacity, if not this is a huge miss by Miscrosoft.
