Export Paginated Report in Group to Excel

Hi,

I am trying to export a report to an Excel file.

When using Reports - Export To File In Group  I get an error "Export report was called with invalid configuration type".

I used the following body for the request

{
  "format": "XLSX",
  "paginatedReportConfiguration": {
    "parameterValues": [
      {
        "name": "$Parameter",
        "value": "$Value"
      },
      {
        "name": "$Parameter",
        "value": "$Value"
      }
    ]
  }
}

I replaced $Parameter and $Value accordingly. I am using an Application Id and an Application Secret to authenticate.

What do I need to export the report to an Excel file?

There are a few potential issues that could be causing this error message.

Firstly, make sure that you are using the correct API endpoint for exporting reports to a file. It should be something like: https://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/groups/{groupId}/reports/{reportId}/ExportTo.

Secondly, ensure that the parameter values you are passing in the request body match the names and values of the parameters in your report. Make sure that you have also selected the correct report ID and group ID.

Another potential issue could be related to the permissions of the app you are using to authenticate. Make sure that the app has the necessary permissions to export reports to a file. You can check this in the Azure portal under App registrations > Your App Name > API permissions.

Lastly, make sure that the format you are requesting the export in (in this case, XLSX) is supported by the Power BI API.

If none of these solutions work, try reaching out to the Power BI support team for further assistance.

AFAIK this error indicates that you are trying to export a report which is not a paginated report, but you are sending paginatedReportConfiguration in the request.

Are you sure that your report is a paginated (AKA RDL) report?

@AmosHersch, I think it isn't. Earlier errors and documentation suggested Excel exports are only possible when I add this parameter. Since the web interface has an Export Data option, where I can only pick .xlsx. My understanding is that this is the only method to do the same using the API.

There's a list of supported types when exporting a paginated report, and a list of types when exporting a Power BI report. You can export a Power BI report to a type which is only supported for a paginated report.

I don't think there's an API for exporting a Power BI report to XLSX. Indeed ou can export a visual data to XLSX, but not the entire report AFAIK.

The confusion for me is that there is an "Export Data" option, which does produce a .xlsx file.
