Embedded dashboard only shows the static part of reports

Embedded dashboard only shows reports that have static content (say, text box).

Reports using a dataset end up with a cross instead. The static part (title, subtitle) still show up though.

Granted all possible permissions on Azure AD for the app that I am using for this embedding exercise.

PowerBI service can successfully display the dashboard.

The samples worked from day one. The problem is now resolved. Issue was caused by insufficient permissions. Per powerbi video (guyinacube) i only gave view/read dashboard permission. Turns out that wasn't enough. I then tried with all permissions enabled. That worked.
