I know that you can export to excel from within the powerbi app itself:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/power-bi-visualization-export-data
However, is there any way you can embed a "download as excel" file or something to a report that is embedded via API?
If not, is this a planned feature, and if so when/how likely is it to be implemented? (i.e. should i just create a workaround?)
I could not find any information on the above...any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @sjorg,
I don't think downloading as excel for a report via Power BI Rest API is supported currently. Here is the idea shared on Power BI Idea forum. You can vote it up and add your comments there to improve Power BI on this feature. ![]()
In addition, while not exactly what you are looking for the api does exist to download the pbix file for a report.
