Creating a connector that uses a native component / ADBC
Thanks. I'm working with Deephaven, which is a column-oriented DB that handles very large datasets. Preserving native driver performance is important for the final solution here. An ODBC wrapper for ADBC drivers would be handy for an interim solution and prototyping, but I am not aware of one that currently exists. I saw a link icon in your response, but it does not seem to go anywhere.
I had already looked through the examples in GitHub. I do not see any C# code there. I was hoping to see one of the Microsoft ADBC connectors, like the Snowflake one. Note that the libadbc_driver_flightsql.dll is part of the current PowerBI distribution, though no connectors seem to yet use it.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi SQLGuy,
Thanks for followupYes, you are right the libadbc_driver_flightsql.dll file is present in Power BI Desktop, but currently there’s no official guide or example from Microsoft on how to use it in custom connectors. Since Power BI’s M language runs in a sandbox, it can’t directly use native DLLs like this. Microsoft’s own connectors like Snowflake are built using C#, and they can work with these DLLs, but those methods and code are not shared publicly on GitHub.
For Deephaven, where performance really matters, using an ADBC-to-ODBC bridge would be a good temporary idea but as you said, right now, there’s no such bridge available. So if you want to get native performance, the it's technically possible but not officially supported where your code loads the DLL using P/Invoke and connects it with M code. But yes, this is a bit complicated and not officially supported at this time.
The broken link you saw earlier was probably just a placeholder.
We also hope Microsoft brings proper support for ADBC in the future. If anything official comes, we will surely update it here.
Hope this helps if you have any queries we are happy to assist you further.
Thank you.- v-hjannapu1 year agoCommunity Support
