Can anybody show an example for drill through when field is used as category or summarized?

Hello Guys,

like in a topic,
Can anybody show an example for drill through when field is used as category or summarized?

I am not catching the difference and in tutorials there is not a lot.

Best,
Jacek

Hi @jaryszek

I have recorded it. Please check the videos to see how it works with category and summarized fields.

Summarization of the videos :
Added Region to Drillthrough page in field

On the main page you will see when you right click on region name then you are able to get option to drill through

Now for the second one :

Add sales to Drillthrough page in field and remove that region from there and use that as summarized
Now go to main page when you select on the region you will see that you are not getting the option for drill through but when you right click on sales values you will get the drill through option.
I have also added the pbix file on which can test by watching the videos or whatever above i have written.

category drillthrough filters by a value (like Region = West), while summarized drillthrough filters by a number (like Sales = 450).

If this answers your questions, kindly accept it as a solution and give kudos.

Hi @jaryszek ,

When field is used as Category:

  • You have a field like "Product Category" in your visual
  • User clicks on "Electronics"
  • Drill-through takes them to a detailed report showing all individual products within Electronics category
  • The category value acts as a filter parameter

When field is Summarized:

  • You have aggregated data like "Total Sales" (sum of sales amounts)
  • User clicks on a specific data point showing $50K total sales
  • Drill-through passes the underlying details that make up that $50K
  • Could show individual transactions, time periods, or whatever contributes to that sum

Quick Example: Main report shows Sales by Region (summarized). Click on "West Region: $100K" → drill-through to detailed report showing all individual sales transactions in West region that add up to $100K.

The key difference is that category drilling filters by dimension values, while summarized drilling breaks down aggregated measures into their components.

Try creating a simple sales report with both scenarios - you'll see the difference immediately in how the target report receives and uses the passed values.
