when connecting to SAP HANA Cloud (RISE) from Power BI
Hi Anonymous,
I am trying to connect to SAP HANA Cloud (SAP RISE) from Power BI Desktop for the first time using the SAP HANA Database connector.
The connection to the server is successful, and I can browse the available Calculation Views. However, when I select a Calculation View and try to preview or load the data, I receive the following error:
Expression.Error: Access to the resource is forbidden.
Environment:
- Power BI Desktop
- SAP HANA Database Connector
- SAP HANA Cloud (RISE)
- Latest SAP HANA client/ODBC driver installed
What I have observed:
- Power BI successfully connects to the SAP HANA server.
- I can see the Calculation View and its columns.
- The error appears when Power BI tries to retrieve data/preview data.
- The same error occurs for all columns selected.
Has anyone experienced this issue before?
Could this be related to SAP HANA privileges, analytical privileges, connector settings, or something else?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

You are correct issue is not with the connector or Power bi issue, as per the screenshot you shared, That usually means the connection itself is working, but the SAP user lacks permissions to execute/read data from the view.
You can perform below checks
1. Missing Analytical Privileges - check with SAP HANA, if you are able to access the calculation and you've right to query it (analytical privileges are commonly used to restrict data access)
2. Missing SELECT Privileges - You may have access to the matadata but don't have access to query the calculated views
3. Calculation View Depends on Restricted Objects - Your calculated view depends on other tables/view for which user don't have access to
4. Dynamic Analytic Privileges - Check if there is any row level security applied on the tables/views, If Power BI sends a query that doesn't satisfy the privilege logic, HANA can return a forbidden error.
5. Test in HANA Database Explore - Try accessing(Querying) the calculated view/table in SAP HANA

Also If I am selecting only Billing Type then the error is same
