Impactful Individualwhat to do when desktop updates cant be automatic
Hi I am learnng as fast as possible. In our environment, we request temporary stoppage of certain security software while upgrades take place on our local machines. For this reason I believe we will need an alternative to automatic pbi desktop updates.
Is there a tab on the desktop called "upgrade now" or something like that? One we can push once we know our security defenses have been temporarily shut down?
Also, in the post at https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/giving-users-the-quot-power-quot-of-power-bi-without-making-them/m-p/2257361#M820870 , an expert made me think that the service itself can be used, in addition to everything else it does, as a public desktop. Is that true? Would there be a shortcoming (eg # licenses) if it was the choice over deploying the desktop itself to multiple user machines?

As far as I am concerned,the Microsoft Store version of Power BI Desktop will updates automatically. As soon as a new update is available from Power BI Team, the application automatically updates itself to the latest version and you don’t need to do any extra actions to keep it up-to-date.
If the Power BI Desktop is installed through the download link, it will not be updated automatically, and when the version is updated, you will be prompted that there is an updatable version in the lower right corner of the Power BI Desktop.

Liang, once the notification has arrived and i've temporarily turned off security, can i hit a button on my instance of the desktop to say "ok update"?
Amit, thats a lot of info but i'm only at a 20,000 foot level right now. Does that deployment strategy apply even after say 10 of our users are already using the desktop? ie will it perhaps destroy anything they already have? And why would i want that over what Liang is suggesting? I'm looking high level right now so i can get the "vision" and i am still curious about perhaps the service itself eing used as a "public desktop". maybe with such a strategy we wouldnt be worried about peoples' desktop instances?

maybe "automatic updates" is allowable on the desktop? And automatic updates happen even when McAfee stands in their way?
i guess we will have to muddle thru this ourselves. i'll post what i find after we try things out. i'll suggest to our ops staff that we try simply installing the desktop on 2 developer machines 1st and watch and learn how our security software and "automatic updates" on this product interact. i'm reluctant to get into the mass deployment model suggested by amit just yet. it seems complicated and we just want to get our feet wet at this point. we arent even sure yet if pbi is good for us. And even if it is, if the desktop will be necessary once we install the on prem service. we wonder if the service can serve as a "public desktop" and i guess we will learn that the hard way too.
