what is the difference between a paginated report and regular ssrs rdl

hi, we have paginated .rdl's and regular rdl's all over our ssrs server.  is there a difference in the xml metadata code behind the scenes?  what action causes a report to be added as paginated as opposed to vanilla rdl?  i understand that paginated can be added to the service if we want, but why anm i seeeing a proliferation of paginated on prem?

Hi,@db042190 Hello,@Greg_Deckler,thanks for your concern about this issue.

Your answer is excellent! And I would like to share some additional suggestions below.
I am glad to help you.

Based on your description, you want to understand the difference between SSRS RDL and Power BI paginated reports

For the most part, SSRS RDL and Power BI paginated reports are similar in that they both follow the same XML framework defined by the Report Definition Language (DRL).
SSRS RDL: It is a server-based report generation platform, usually integrated with SQL Server. You can use SQL Server Data Tools

Power BI Paginated Reports: It is a part of Power BI for creating paged reports. You can use Power BI Report Builder to design and generate these reports.
Power BI Paginated Reports Integration with Power BI Services

For the most part, the two are similar, but there are some differences

Below I have provided you with information that will help you understand the differences between the two of them

You can migrate SSRS RDL files to Power BI

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

not really, not talking about pbi here.  Here is a page from ssrs that delineates what you see in the folder as paginated.  i cant find an example but ibelieve i've seen for years just a list of reports in a folder, not designated as paginated.   maybe it would just say reports.

@db042190 An RDL is an RDL. Now, there are different versions of the specification but an RDL is the format for SSRS reports (paginated reports) and has always been. Are you saying that a "vanilla RDL" only has a single page and some of the reports have multiple pages and are thus "paginated"? Sorry, not quite sure I am following.
