waterfall chart

Can we create a waterfall chart like this in Power BI

Nikhil_567_0-1729498705647.png

Like by default we just get Increase/Decrease in waterfall chart in two colours, but here we need to show each bars in different color for each categories.

I have masked the X axis for data confidentialty.

Doesn't work

Try this

Create a Custom Column for Colors:
In your data model, create a custom column that assigns a unique color to each category. You can use a DAX formula to define this column.
CategoryColor =
SWITCH(
TRUE(),
[Category] = "Category1", "#FF5733", // Red
[Category] = "Category2", "#33FF57", // Green
[Category] = "Category3", "#3357FF", // Blue
// Add more categories and colors as needed
"#000000" // Default color (black)
)

Add the Custom Column to Your Waterfall Chart:
Add your data to the waterfall chart as usual.
Drag the CategoryColor column to the Legend field well of the waterfall chart.
Format the Waterfall Chart:
Go to the Format pane.
Under Data colors, set the colors for each category based on the CategoryColor column.
Adjust the Chart Settings:
Ensure that the Sentiment option is turned off in the Format pane. This will allow you to use the custom colors instead of the default increase/decrease colors.

there is no legend section in waterfall chart

you can use the Data colors option in the Format pane to manually set the colors for each category.

Hi @Anonymous ,
If you need to display each bar in a different color for each category, I suggest you try using the simple waterfall visual object, where you can set 'Format using Sentiments' to off and then customize the bar colors.

@saud968 Thanks for your reply.

Can you see Waterfall chart from MAQ on marketplace?

I can't see it and hence can't proceed.

You can use xviz waterfall chart as well -  https://xviz.com/blogs/7-visualization-techniques-with-waterfall-chart-in-power-bi/

Yes, we can create a waterfall chart similar to this in Power BI, including the use of different colors for each category. While the default waterfall chart in Power BI is more limited, we can achieve this look with some customization. Here's how you can approach it:

Use a custom visual: Instead of the default waterfall chart, you can use the "Waterfall Chart by MAQ Software" from the Power BI Marketplace. This visual offers more flexibility in customization.
Color coding: With the MAQ Software waterfall chart, you can assign different colors to each category or bar.
Percentage and value labels: You can add data labels to show both the values and percentages where applicable.
Connectors: The dotted lines connecting the bars can be customized in terms of style and color.
N/A indicators: For the sections marked "N/A", you can use text boxes or shapes overlaid on the chart.
Axis customization: You can hide or customize the X-axis as needed for data confidentiality.
To implement this in Power BI:

Import your data into Power BI.
Add the "Waterfall Chart by MAQ Software" visual from the marketplace.
Configure your data fields (categories, values, etc.).
Use the formatting options to customize colors, labels, and connectors.
Add text boxes for the "N/A" indicators if needed.
Adjust the axis settings to hide or mask confidential information.
Other option is

Create a Custom Column for Colors:
In your data model, create a custom column that assigns a unique color to each category. You can use a DAX formula to define this column.
CategoryColor =
SWITCH(
TRUE(),
[Category] = "Category1", "#FF5733", // Red
[Category] = "Category2", "#33FF57", // Green
[Category] = "Category3", "#3357FF", // Blue
// Add more categories and colors as needed
"#000000" // Default color (black)
)
