I have a matrix visual and I would like to be able to sort the columns (by clicking on column header either ascending or descending) when I hover over it doesn't do anything any ideas for workarounds?

If you enable the total column, you will see that the rows are sorted by the value in that column. Hiding it will not change this behaviour. You will need to create a measure that returns different values as the total based on slicer selection from a column in a disconnected table.

not currently possible. You need to use the "sort a column by another column" workaround. That is a static decision.
