Freezing row headers (left-side) in matrix visuals like Excel: Not supported in Power BI currently.
There is no native setting in Power BI to keep row headers fixed while scrolling down.
This is a known behavior in Power BI matrix visuals:
- The expand/collapse (“+”/“-”) icons are row headers.
- When you scroll vertically, Power BI does not freeze row headers, only column headers.
- So, when the row with the "+" symbol scrolls out of view, the symbol disappears too.
Here's some possible ways to solve the issue:
1. Avoid Collapsing Top-Level Hierarchies
Keeping the Division level expanded (do not collapse it) ensures the "+" remains visible for sub-levels.
2. Redesign the Visual
Use multiple visuals, like:- One matrix to show just top-level (Division), fixed at the top.
- A second matrix below for details with synchronized filters.
This is a manual workaround, but it allows the "+" at the top to always be visible.
3. Create Custom Expand/Collapse Using Bookmarks or Buttons
Advanced option: use buttons and bookmarks to simulate expand/collapse.This is more effort and not as dynamic but allows you to control UI behavior more explicitly.
4. Use Paginated Reports
If you're okay moving out of Power BI Desktop, Paginated Reports (in Report Builder) give more control over fixed headers and expandable rows.If this post helps, then please consider Accepting as solution to help the other members find it more quickly, don't forget to give a "Kudos" – I’d truly appreciate it!
