query tool application for a research group

Hello community,

We are a research group that collects and analyse public health data related to palliative care, and we kindly request your help. 

Our team has many years of experience in visualizing our data in static ways, but now we want to show our data in a more digital and interactive manner in the form of an application that we want to embed in our website.

What we would like to develop, is a query tool application similar to the GBD Result Tool  of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (http://ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-results-tool) and the DataBank tool of the World Bank (https://databank.worldbank.org/source/world-development-indicators). The application should allow users to choose the year of data, the region and/or country, and the indicator(s) they want to see. In addition the user should be able to filter and sort per value of the indicator they have chosen and also have the option in what way the data is visualized (map, table or graph).

Our question to the community is: would it be possible to make a tool like this with PowerBI, or at least reach something close? And if yes, in what aspects of PowerBI do we need to look into?
