I downloaded the latest Power BI Desktop version (July 2016) and installed on top of June 2016 version. Able to open existing PBIX files. The issue is : Power BI Desktop is hanging or not responding while trying to get data for a new/already created PBIX files.
Please download the latest version of Power BI Desktop (release on 8/12): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45331. This issue should be resolved in this release.

i am having the same problem. i don't have a resolution for you, but just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone.
i tried uninstalling and re-installing, but it didn't help. hopefully, someone will respond with a solution.
