I am adding claim type in under date in columns as i want the claim types by month in the data. but its not showing in the matrix, i googled and from the guides i found this should work so i assume i have a setting wrong but i can't find what it is.
any ideas?

you were pretty close.
At the moment you just see the first level in the hierarchy. Now you have to drill down from Year, to Quarter, to Month, to Day to Claim Type. Click the marked error to drill down and keep the context:
You can also use the double arrow next to it. With this one you will just drill down level by level.
