file name

I am looking to rename an existing report and model in my workspace. Do I also need to change the name of the .pbix file that publishes to the workspace?

The file was originally built for FY25, and I want to add fiscal years going forward. This was not the original plan, so FY25 is in the .pbix, report, and model name.

Thank you, Lynn

Hi @lmaltomari

The best thing to do is push the changes from pbix to the service, so yes please rename the pbix to.

Renaming on the service alone can cauze confusion and artifacts become out of synch.

When you rename the pbix it will create the new report and semantic model with the same name so all is aligned.

@lmaltomari  Yep rename the pbix and publish. After this, deleted the old files from the server and re-do any access permissions (should these be added directly to the file - rather than to a workspace). Finally you will need to republish the app (if you are using one).

I want to make sure I understand - I will first change the .pbix file name, and then update the names within the workspace.  So, when I publish, it will overwrite the items in the workspace.

I am new to this, so I do not want to mess anything up. I want access by the end-user to be unaffected.   Thanks

Hi, my suggestion would be to not change the names in the service independantly.

Its been a while but from memory I recal Power BI still holds metadata info about files so even if you rename them, sometimes a new file is created after publishing.

I way to test this would be to use your MyWorkspace to check the behaviour before you do it.

But the safest is to rename from pbix and publish to the service.  Then re-share the new link to the report or app.  Its a small price to pay but its managed and safer than guessing what will happen.
