data labels for percent from prior and line graph for totals

Hello.

My data looks something like this pseudo data (fuller sample inserted from excel in link below)

lauriedata_0-1759604326970.png

I'm trying to replicate this visual from tableau into power bi and cannot figure out how to place the data labels for the period over period change (percent from prior)  but have the line represent the total enrollment.  (For now please disregard that the x-axis is month-name and not a fiscal nbr - I will use the fiscal nbr in the x axis).

Hi,

Check the link.  There is no file there.  Also, on the X-axis, do you want financial year?  From which month, does the FY start?

Hello.  I'm not sure why the file doesn't show data.  When I click on it, it does.   I'm not concerned with the fiscal year for now.  My fiscal year starts in January but as I mentioned, I am using the field "fiscal nbr" in the x axis, so calendar construction is not an issue.  Thanks again.  Here is the link again: pseudo data

Here's what i see when i click on that link

Hi @lauriedata ,

I wanted to check if you had the opportunity to follow up on our previous conversation. If yes can you please provide the sample data so that we can provide you with the accurate and correct solution.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Thank you.

Hello.  Thank you for checking. None of these are my solution.  It does not appear (for now) that I can replicate what I was able to do in Tableau.

I'm guessing this is an auto response since I already responded in my reply.  Thanks so much.

Hi, in addition to the regualr DAX way you may also use visual calculation, which would let you write calculations in the context of the visual, similar to Tableau table calcs e.g. WINDOW_SUM, LOOKUP, etc..

With some random sample data like yours, i used 'Versus Pervious'

MasonMA_0-1759616430288.png

create a simple calculation below, (EnrolmentTotal = SUM(table[Enrollment]))

PoP % =
DIVIDE([EnrolmentTotal] - PREVIOUS([EnrolmentTotal]), PREVIOUS([EnrolmentTotal]))

After this format this 'PoP % ' in 'Data Format' under 'Property' to Percentage.

Hi Thank you but I only see a line for the percent change  I need the line to be enrollment and the data labels to show the percent change.

With Visual calculation, it is still possible to use lines to represent 'Enrolment' but %POP changes are displayed on Y-axis and Tooltips, while Data label is showing the actual 'enrolment' count.

Thank you sincerely for all your responses. However that is not what I am hoping to develop.  I need PoP % in labels and enrollment as the line.

Hi

You can recreate this Tableau-style visual in Power BI using a Combo Chart (Line and Column chart) with two separate measures:

-Total Enrollment → for the line
-% Change from Prior Period → for the data labels

Here’s how you can set it up:

Step 1: Create Measures

Total Enrollment = SUM('Table'[Enrollment])

% Change from Prior Period =
VAR Prev = CALCULATE([Total Enrollment], DATEADD('Date'[Date], -1, MONTH))
RETURN
DIVIDE([Total Enrollment] - Prev, Prev)

Step 2: Build the visual

  • Use the Combo Chart (Line and Clustered Column).

  • Put your Month/Fiscal Period on the X-axis.

  • Columns → [Total Enrollment]

  • Line → % Change from Prior Period]

  • Turn on Data Labels only for the line to show the % values.

    Step 3: Formatting

    • Format the % Change line labels as percentage.

    • Adjust Y-axes (one for Enrollment, one for %).

    • Optionally use “Secondary Axis” for clarity.

That should reproduce your Tableau layout with totals as the line and period-over-period % change as the labels.

If you want, I can share a quick PBIX example or screenshot of the setup.

i hope this help you and Accept as Solution and giving it a Like 👍– it helps others in the community too.

      Thanks 🌹

Hi.  Thank you for your time.  I tried this but I only see an option for column legend.  I need the enrollment to be a line graph and the labels to be a percent change.  What happens when I put enrollment in the line is I lose my legend, so, as a result, I lose my triple lines and it becomes one line (because the legend is only allowed for the column).  Also, I only see an option for secondary y axis in the format, not the build. (maybe that's what you meant?).
