I thought that if you in desktop
1. changed a visual to a new chart type (say line to column)
2. created a bookmark to capture the change that would appear as a published bookmark.
3. changed the chart type back to restore the original view
4. published the report and updated the app it was part of
5. go to that report and click the now published bookmark
that it would change the chart type. If I exited and opened the report again it would be as it was originally.
It seems to be ignoring the chart change
If I do this as a personalization on the service and then create a personal bookmark it does the chart change.
I thought this was possible as a published bookmark from desktop

Hi @bsheffer ,
According to the design of the bookmarks, it will only save the following content:
Create report bookmarks in Power BI to share insights and build stories
So it doesn't save changes to the chart type.
There's a workround:
Create two visuals and save their visibility properties using bookmarks, which can then be used to switch between them.

created 2 sets of visuals and using the bookmark to hide and unhide each set was the solution I went with. Thanks for confirming my solution.
