can we represent text data with numeric data

Hi All,
i have requirement to use scatter chart, in scatter chart, the x-axis is accepting columns, but in y-axis its accepts only measures, i need to use a text column in y-axis, for that i have tried creating a measure : selcected value(column) - now this measures output is in text and datatype is also in text. i want to change the datatype to numeric by keeping the output result in text only. so that if the datatype gets converts into numeric, i can use that measure in scatter chart.
