I maintain an archive of PBIX files as backups and for version history purposes. With the announcement that PBIR will become the default format in early 2026 and eventually the only supported format at GA, I have a concern about backward compatibility.
Will my existing PBIX files (saved in the current PBIR-Legacy format) still open in future versions of Power BI Desktop once PBIR is mandatory?
I understand that:
But I want to confirm: does this mean older PBIX files will automatically convert to PBIR when opened, or will there be a point where legacy PBIX files simply won't open anymore?
For those of us with years of archived reports, understanding this migration path is important for planning purposes.
Thanks!

Hi @P0WER_BI,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.
Yes the existing and archived PBIX files will continue to open in future versions of power bi desktop.
When PBIR becomes the only supported report format, this affects how reports are saved, not whether older PBIX files can be opened. If an older PBIX uses the legacy internal format, desktop will automatically upgrade it to PBIR when the file is opened and saved. No manual migration is required just to open archived files.

Hi @P0WER_BI
Yes, archived PBIX files will still open in future Power BI Desktop versions after PBIR becomes mandatory. Microsoft stated that the PBIX file format isnot going away and the transition to PBIR affects internal report metadata but not the ability to open and work with PBIX files. When you open an older PBIX in a future Desktop release, it will automatically convert the legacy report metadata to PBIR under the hood while still using the .pbix extension, preserving backward compatibility.

Please Check:

Beginning in January 2026, all new reports created in the Power BI service will use the PBIR format by default, with the rollout starting in January and completing by the end of February. Existing service reports will be automatically converted to PBIR when edited and saved. Power BI Desktop will begin using PBIR as the default format with the March 2026 release.
When PBIR reaches General Availability (GA), it will become the only supported report format. All reports will automatically convert to the PBIR format, and PBIR-Legacy will no longer be supported. We recommend preparing for this migration ahead of GA.
PBIX files are – and will remain – the primary file format for Power BI developers. For PBIX users, this upgrade will be completely silent, with no impact on their experience. However, this change affects how the Power BI report is stored inside the PBIX. Instead of using the PBIR-Legacy format, PBIX will use the PBIR format, bringing full parity between PBIX and PBIP file structures for report metadata.
