In my date dimension i have a Date column. In the database this is just a date, not a date time. When i try to filter based on this date column in powerBIDesktop however, i have to select 00:00:00 as the time or i get no values back. PowerBIDesktop is appending on a time value that shouldnt be there and doesnt exist. - why is this added? - is there a way I can disable it? Note, i tried using a string version of the date, but it is sorted incorrectly in the powerBIDesktop filter panel. its sorted correctly in the tabular database but PowerbiDesktop ignores this.

Edit your query, select the column and switch it to "Date" versus "Date/Time". This is the "Data Type" in the Transform area of the ribbon.

im not using power query, im querying the data model directly.
I'm not understanding what you are saying here. You are using Power BI Desktop, correct? When you create your query in Power BI Desktop (which is basically "Power Query" in Excel terminology), instead of just next, next finishing your way through, enter the path to your data source, choose "Edit" button that appears in bottom right of the preview window. Then, you can choose your column and set the data type as described. Then choose "Close & Apply" from the ribbon.
If you already have your query created, then on your "Home" tab, you can click "Edit Queries" in your "External Data" area of the ribbon and do the same thing.
