When are the filters applied to the data?

Hi All, I have a doubt regarding the application of filters to the data. When are the filters applied to the data?. I'm considering the following two scenarios in Direct Query mode: 1. All the data field is pulled into the report and then the page level or report level filter is applied to the whole data. 2. A query consisting of all the filters applied to report is sent to the database and only the filtered data is being pulled into the report. Kindly clarify me with the above two options or let me know if it is not these two.

@viveksasi94  It will be option 1 in Direct Query mode.

Hi @viveksasi94,

Both options are viable in power bi. You can have a data model without any filter and then place filters at report level, page level, visual level or even at a measure level (DAX) or you can make the model filtered before.

On the second option you also have several options depending on the data source. You can make filters at query level getting only the information you want, you can create parameters to have the filters be applied after getting the query data on PBI and in this case the information consider to your model is filtered out however you see it as a part of the steps of your data treatment.

You have several options as you can see and the have several pros and cons and depend on the needs on your setup.
