Is my feeling correct that all transformations are allowed to a DQ as long as Query folding takes place? Is this the way to find the limits of what can be done?

I guess this is the answer in your link that confirms:
DirectQuery and Dual storage mode tables: Each DirectQuery and Dual storage mode table (Power BI only) must be based on a Power Query query that can be folded.
But there are some limitations in the second link 🙂
