We couldn't connect to your DirectQuery data source or internal model

Hi IanCockcroft 

As tested with last Power BI Desktop version(2.73.5586.1101 64-bit),

It works on my side to connect my SQL Server Database in direct query.

 

If this error just happens on Power BI Desktop,

First check if your server and database name is correct. Also check if your server has access to that database.
If your data source is SQL Server database, use SSMS to connect to the same server and database, check if the connection works.

 

Run Power BI Desktop as Administrator and turn off any virus anti app.

Could there be any issue if PowerBI Desktop cannot be run as Administrator? I have the same issue with the connection, but running PowerBI as Admin is not an option.

    Also  not an admin, but i got someone who is to try. same story
