We couldn't connect to your DirectQuery data source or internal model

Hi guys,

brand new installation and I get this when starting PBI

any ideas why?

    Hi IanCockcroft 

    As tested with last Power BI Desktop version(2.73.5586.1101 64-bit),

    It works on my side to connect my SQL Server Database in direct query.

     

    If this error just happens on Power BI Desktop,

    First check if your server and database name is correct. Also check if your server has access to that database.
    If your data source is SQL Server database, use SSMS to connect to the same server and database, check if the connection works.

     

    Run Power BI Desktop as Administrator and turn off any virus anti app.

      Hi Maggie,

      thanks for taking a look.

       

      I have  new lap top and its a clean installation.

      I am using wi-fi where as before it was on the LAN. But I have not added any sources, so not sure why its even trying to connect one.

      I made sure there are no global connections.

      no luck

       

      I added a quick excel file and new report nd got this error

      Could there be any issue if PowerBI Desktop cannot be run as Administrator? I have the same issue with the connection, but running PowerBI as Admin is not an option.

    Hi IanCockcroft 

    First please make sure you install the lastest version from this site instead of MS Store,

    also check the system requirements for installing and using power bi desktop.

     

    Please launch Power BI Desktop as an administrator(right click on the power bi app, then select "run as admin"), and then making the SQL Server connection.

    More suggested solutions here to errors when using power bi desktop for first time.

     

    As said in the thread, you may check and modify configurations on your server.

    There is SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) instance behind each PBI file (new or existing one). Your error is 99% related to this SSAS engine. 

    One of cases can be that your firewall, brandmauer or anti-virus is blocking it. Refer to these links:

    I solved this issue by running "sfc /scannow" from Windows Command Prompt. It seems there were some corrupt files on my OS.
