Hi @ILG-PBI -This message indicates that the Power BI report you’re trying to open was saved in an earlier version of Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server. If you save changes in your current version of Power BI Desktop, the report may no longer be compatible with the earlier version, meaning you won’t be able to upload it back to Power BI Report Server or open it in that version.

Open the Report in the Earlier Version of Power BI Desktop:

  • If you still have access to the earlier version of Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server, try opening and editing the report in that version to maintain compatibility.
  • Download and Install the Compatible Version for Power BI Report Server:
    • Go to the Power BI Report Server download page, and ensure you download and install the version of Power BI Desktop that matches your Power BI Report Server version.
    • Power BI Report Server is updated separately from Power BI Service, with specific releases in January, May, and September each year. Make sure you use the corresponding Power BI Desktop version for your server.

If you must work in a newer version of Power BI Desktop, avoid saving changes if you need compatibility with an earlier version.

Alternatively, you can save a copy of the report with changes for personal use but keep the original report unchanged for Power BI Report Server compatibility.
