Update/edit PBIX file uploaded to sharepoint

Hi all,

 

In essence, my question is: Is it possible to edit/update a Power BI Desktop file (PBIX) that it uploaded to sharepoint?

 

In detail the problem is the following:

 

I have built a data model in Excel using the PowerPivot plug-in to extract and model data from an SQL server. This file is uploaded to a sharepoint, and used to create various reports and dashboards, and data is updated automatically using a gateway - no problem here.

 

However, now my client would like to be able to limit the access and editing rights for different roles in their organisation - which as i understand is not possible unless i use the RLS feature (row level security) in Power Bi desktop. Creating the data model in Power Bi desktop is not a problem in itself apart from taking time, however, the file containing the data model has to be available on a sharepoint site, so that if the responsible person resigns, it is still accessable - and this is where my problem arrises: 

 

When i upload the PBIX file to sharepoint, i can access it from PowerBi.com no problem. However, it seems i cannot make changes to the PBIX file that is uploaded, as everytime i click it, it downloads a separate version of the file. 

 

This is no problem with excel files uploaded to sharepoint, which opens the current version on my desktop, and uploads a new one when e.g. a new KPI has been added..

 

Really hope someone can help, as this is a big problem for me!

    It's not possible to have the changes you made in Power BI Desktop (local environment) directly synchronized into cloud side, not even possible for Power BI Service . You must publish your .pbix. And for SharePoint, you have to re-upload the .pbix file. 

     

    By the way, Row Level Security can't apply on SharePoint site. To make use of RLS, you must work on Power BI Service. Because for each role, you can only add members from Power BI Service.

    v-sihou-msft I need the same cappability, to edit PBIX files from sharepoint, open a file that lives online through my native PBI onmy computer. 

     

    Will this be a cappability that microsoft will try to work on? or should I just find a work around alltogether?

    and if the former is yes, do you have a timeline?
