I'm not sure if I'm missing something here. I have data in excel that I want to pin to my dashboard. In all the online tutorials I can find, they say to import the file and it'll come up like excel online and you can select the cells and then pin them.
When I try, it only lets me select a cell or column, like it does with the table that I'm using for the rest of the dash. It doesn't look anything like what I see on the video tutorials. I did try to replicate in the browser version, but PBI keeps erroring out when I try to publish so I haven't been able to try it that way. Is this something that can only be done on the web version, or am I just missing a step somewhere? I used:
Get data > Excel > File name
And I chose the sheets with the ranges I need to use on it. The info came across okay, but I just can't seem to do anything with it. Not sure if it helps, but here (https://imgur.com/a/tZdkcpy) is a small section of the sheet so you can see how it appears. If someone could let me know, I'd appreciate it!

Hi @Anonymous ,
Do you mean select on the data view of Power BI Desktop?
But if you want to use the feature "select range of workbook and pin to dashboard" which mentioned in our previous reply, we need to upload the workbook to Power BI Service.
Best regards,
Hi @Anonymous ,
Pin a range of excel to dashboard is a feature of Power BI Service as the dashboard is in service, Please refer to this document about this feature: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-dashboard-pin-tile-from-excel
If you want to put some data to report in Desktop/Service, we can use the table visual (put the columns you want, and then set filter on this visual).
Best regards,
Hi Dong,
Thanks for that. My problem is more that I can't select the range to be able to pin it. I can only select 1 cell or 1 column. I'm in the Data section, if that helps. Am I supposed to be in another section of the program?
Thanks for the help!

@v-lid-msft Ahhh thank you! I knew I was probably just missing something stupidly obvious. I've never done anything beside viewing dashboards/reports inside the web version as previous projects were fully doable within the desktop program. Thanks so much!
Hi @Anonymous
Is Status the column name for Preliminary, Discussion ongoing?
Also, can you paste this data sample here?
Hi Mariusz,
Yes, it is. Its actually vertical text in the spreadsheet (I have this same data laid out for other categories, I'm just trying to keep it simple here), hence the odd location on the sheet (Excel version here)
When you say paste the data sample, do you want the actual background data, or the formulas I use in excel? Sorry I'm still very much learning my way around this
Hi @Anonymous
I'm after data itself, so I can copy and paste in order to transform ( I can't copy the screenshot ), you should be able to copy this table from excel and paste it here.
