Unable to install Power BI Desktop on Windows 2016 Server
- 2 years ago
Hello coolsandeee , 2016 is only supported for patches and security until 2027. Do you have enough disk space for a Windows 11 VM to manage your development?

Hi coolsandeee ,
foodd Thanks for your reply!
Until now, latest version of Desktop still supports Windows Server 2016:However, your error message suggests that your IE version is too low. The version of Power BI Desktop you currently downloaded only supports IE 9 RTM and above, while the latest version of Power BI Desktop already needs to support IE 10 and above. Please update your IE version and try the installation again.

The product lifecycle table for Internet Explorer indicates that it has matured and is retired (except in certain non-mainstream cases). The table indicates that Windows Server 2016 would rely on Internet Explorer 11. However, it's important to note that Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11 have reached their end of life and are no longer supported. Windows Server is mature and will only receive support for patches and security until 2027.
In addition, Internet Explorer 11 is blocked on the Desktop to reduce its installation footprint, making it impractical to run Power BI Desktop on Server 2016.
Therefore, the most practical recommendation would be to run Power BI Desktop on Server 2016 with Desktop Experience, preferably within a Virtual Machine running Windows 11.
