Unable to Connect to MySQL Database in Power BI – Connector Error Despite Multiple Attempts

Hi Power BI Community,

I'm facing an issue when trying to connect Power BI Desktop to a MySQL database. Every time I try, I get this error message:

"This connector requires one or more additional components to be installed before it can be used."

I’ve tried several solutions but nothing has worked so far. Here’s what I’ve done:

  • Installed MySQL Connector/ODBC (both 32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Restarted the system after installing the connector

  • Reinstalled Power BI Desktop (latest version)

  • Made sure both Power BI and the MySQL connector are 64-bit

Still, the same error appears every time. I’ve attached a screenshot of the message I see.

Can someone please help me understand what exactly needs to be done to resolve this and successfully connect to a MySQL database?

Thanks in advance for your support!

  • uninstall everything, then install the .Net driver 8.0.28 64 bit

    Hi Ibendlin,

Thank you for your earlier suggestion to uninstall and reinstall the MySQL Connector/NET 8.0.28 (64-bit). I followed the steps meticulously: uninstalled all related components, installed the specified .NET driver version, and restarted my PC. Despite these efforts, I'm still encountering the same connector error when attempting to connect Power BI to my MySQL database.

I've also ensured that the MySQL service is running and can connect using MySQL Workbench without issues. However, Power BI continues to prompt for the connector installation or fails to establish the connection.

Could you please advise on any additional steps or configurations that might resolve this persistent issue?

    Best regards,

MySQL Connector Issue with Power BI

        Hi Vinay,

As advised, I’ve uninstalled the Microsoft Store version of Power BI and installed the recommended version from the official Microsoft link you shared. I also ensured that the MySQL Connector Net 8.0.28 is correctly installed, as per the guidance from the Fabric community.

Despite following all the steps, I’m still encountering the same issue when attempting to connect to a MySQL database in Power BI. The error indicates that additional components are required. Please find the relevant screenshots attached for your reference:

        1. Installed version of MySQL Connector 8.0.28

        2. Power BI installation (from official .exe)

        3. Error message while accessing MySQL database in Power BI

I would appreciate your further guidance on resolving this.

        Best regards,
        Sreethar

    Hi lbendlin,

Thank you for your guidance. I followed your suggestion and performed a clean uninstall of all components inclusing MYSQL and Power BI also.

After reinstalling everything—including the .NET driver version 8.0.28 (64-bit)—I was able to successfully establish the MySQL server connection.

    Appreciate your support!

    Best regards,
    Sreethar
