Trying to compare years in review monthly using various charts

Hi PBI community,

I am trying to compare three separate years of data in mostly line and bar graphs to show the differences after reviewing each year in detail on other dashboards. Unfortunately each graph I make will only give detailed information on one of the years (never the same year on different graphs) and the other two are sum totals of the entire year. So lets say one bar graph says for category "Operating" 200k and 1M and 1M, next one over "Teaching" 350k and 1M and 1M, and so on. Or in the case of a line graph for the year, one year will go up and down month to month but the other two are flat totals at the top.
Now each yeah has a payment date category and I have tried all of them, none of them, brought in a new data set that encompasses all three and I either get just blank graphs, one varied out of three, or all flat.

Please help! Thanks in advance.

You probably need to use the CALCULATE with the time intelligence functions for your years.  One measure for each year and additional measures for the differences between.

Let's say [cost] is a measure that adds up the cost and assume you have a date table called calendar.  Here are some examples.  Note that you need to be mindful of what date is filtered at report, page & visual level; I often times set the page level filter at In This Year.

PY COST = calculate([cost],dateadd('calendar'[Date],-1,YEAR)) will get you last year's sales
YTD COST= CALCULATE([COST],DATESYTD('calendar'[Date]))
PYTD /COST= CALCULATE([YTD COST], SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR('calendar'[Date]))
Diff COST YTD vs PYTD = [YTD COST]-[PYTD COST]

Can you post a screen shot?

Notice the blue graph at the bottom being varied and orange and dark blue are totals of the year.
