Tooltip in Line and Clustered Column Chart

Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to Power BI. I was asked to have a tooltip for the bars and another one for the line. I looked around and the best I found was creating a report page of the type tooltip and associating it to the graph customization options. However I did not find a way to differentiate tooltips between the two "shapes". Is it even possible?

Explanation with an example:

My task was to display the number of complaints (made and resolved) over a set of schools and, in each school, to clearly display the place (classroom A, classroom B, classroom C, cafeteria, principal's office, ...) with the most complaints.

What i came up with was a Line and Clustered Column Chart where the columns will show the complaints and the line (it is not really a line, just the dot) will be showing the max in that school.

The tooltip would be a standard one in the bars but in the "line" would also show what is the name of the place with the most complaints. If I just add the "place" variable in the Tooltip option in the "Fields", it will also show "place" in the bars which makes no sense since the bars aggregate all places in that school.

Hope i was clear with my explanation.

Hi @DFC ,

Here is Dot and clustered column chart which will help you get different tooltip for dot and clustered column chart.

Download link for the custom visual file in this page,

https://pbivizedit.com/gallery/custom-tooltip-for-dot-and-clustered-column-chart

This was made with our Custom Visual creator tool PBIVizEdit.com. With this tool,

  • anyone, irrespective of technical skills, can create their own visuals
  • 15 minutes to create a visual from scratch
  • opens up many additional attributes to edit (for e.g. labels, tooltips, legends position, etc)

Give this a shot and let us know if you face any problem/errors.
You can use the editor to modify your visual further (some modifications cannot be done in Power BI window and have to be in editor).

Thanks,
Team PBIVizEdit

Hi @DFC ,

Sorry for that, But we cannot understand your data model clearly, Could you please provide a mockup sample based on fake data or describle the fields of each tables and the relations between tables simply? It will be helpful if you can show us the exact expected result based on the tables. Please upload your files to One Drive and share the link here.

Please don't contain any Confidential Information or Real data in your reply.

The school example I gave is just something I came up with that best resembles what I actually have to work with.

Here is the link to the mockup report itself: School Complaints Report

Basically I have this tooltip as default.

If you've seen the data, it makes no sense to have the Place specified in the bar's tooltip since they aggregate all places. In the tooltip, where it would make sense to have it specified, it doesn´t show...

I have searched a bit more thoroughly and found this post from 2017 that asks essentially the same question

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Line-and-Clustered-Column-Chart-How-to-add-tool-tip-on-line...

They have since submitted the suggestion but I dont think it has been implemented yet.

Side note: your posting box (the place where I´m writting right now) is terrible. The way ones inserts images feels archaic, the finished message (the one that gets seen by everyone) is rather different from what I see as I am writting (the paragraphs and spacing for example)... The whole aspect of it feels old and outdated and doesn´t really make me want to post here all that often tbh.

Cheers

Hi @DFC ,

Thank you for your additional information, the default tooltips field does not show in the line chart is a issue we have reported in January 2020, the ETA of fix  is approximately mid April. Currently we can use a custom tooltips page as a workaround.

Please refer to this thread (Reply 3 - 5) about this issue: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Tooltip-for-value-to-0-in-any-visuals/m-p/906118

As I mentioned earlier,

"and the best I found was creating a report page of the type tooltip and associating it to the graph customization options"

I tried custom tooltips but they were not a vlid solution. If I force all tooltips on that graph to show "First Place", it will be present on the bars and showing "First Place" there makes no sense.

I'll wait for the April update to see if the problem is solved or if there's another workaround introduced.
