Timeline slicer crashes visualswhen filtering start date
I have tried this on several machines and with several data models with totally different data and data sources:
I have a very simple data model; just a few tables built from sheets in Excel.
I can build any variety of standard visuals and they work great.
I can filter the data in the Filters pane, with a normal slicer, doing visual interaction, etc. It is all fine.
But when I create a TIMELINE sicer with the long timeline bar and the start & end date fields (date pickers), I get into trouble:
- I can drag the slicer bar at the end date and it works fine but
- when I drag the slicer bar or pick a start date, all the visuals crash with the following message.
- when I drag the bar back or reset the date, the visuals do not recover, but if I remove the slicer, they all come back fine.
I have done this in the past and it worked. I already tried uninstalling Power BI Desktop, to no avail. I tried another data model and got the same result.
If this is an actual bug, I do not know if I can or where I might submit it.
Hi vesc ,
If you are using any custom visual for this, try using standard date slicer for this.

Oh yes, and it it is before the slicer is added and filtering, or after the slicer is removed. just a simple table and clusterd column chart.

For the date field in your slicer are you using the date from a date table or calendar table? If so, what relationships are set up between the date table and the other tables in the model? Could you send a screenshot of the data model if possible?

Hi Anonymous ,
This can be due to many reasons-
1. Measures used in the visuals are filtering off the column used in slicer
2.There is no proper relationship between the fields you are using in the visuals and the slicer field
3.Not using latest desktop version
Can you please share some more detailed information about your scenarios? (e.g. desktop version, data source type, and connection mode) They will help us clarify your situation
Thanks! - v-sdhruv

I have the same problem, on two different machines but with the same version : 2.142.1277.0.
A visual with a date slicer used to work and works on one machine, while it crashes on another machine.

Hi Anonymous ,
I had tried reproducing the scenario and the slicer works fine.
Below data selected from 2002-2018 and the column chart works fine.I have used latest Power BI desktop version.
Can you try in latset version?
Hope this helps!

the new May 2025 version does not seem to be available yet. we keep getting the same version 2.142.1277.0. Could it be that it is missing yet in German?

I have the new version of Power BI Desktop now and the problem persists.
I am using a calender table. I get the above error as soon as I have the slicer interact with the matrix visual. Only if I remove the limitations in the slicer (so select all dates) the error disapears.
Now if I transfer the same POwer BI file to another environment, all works fine. Same if I upload the file to the cloud services, it also works fine.
Is the some kind of process that interfers with the date slicer or some kind of prerequisit that is necessary?
