Summarised table and slicer not working

Hi all,

I have created a summarised table off a main table (normalised ranks) and have a column chart that runs off the summarised table.
I have a slicer that contains PERIOD and YTD(Timeframe) off the main table (normalised ranks), however, when I click on the slicer for either PERIOD or YTD (Timeframe) the column chart does not change, what am I missing in the DAX below??
Thanks

SummarizedTableNorm =
SUMMARIZE(
    'Ranks Normalised',
    'Ranks Normalised'[TIMEFRAME],
    'Ranks Normalised'[PERIOD_KEY],
    'Ranks Normalised'[REPORT_KEY],
    'Ranks Normalised'[BU_TOTAL_BRAG],
    'Ranks Normalised'[DIV_TOTAL_BRAG],
    'Ranks Normalised'[OM_TOTAL_BRAG],
    'Ranks Normalised'[BDM_TOTAL_BRAG],
    'Ranks Normalised'[GM_TOTAL_BRAG]
)
  • Your slicer doesn’t affect the chart because you created a new table with SUMMARIZE(). That summarized table is a separate physical table, and unless you create relationships (or use a measure that re-applies the filter), slicers on the original table won’t filter it.

Also, SUMMARIZE() is evaluated at model refresh time, not dynamically per slicer selection.

  • Hi Anonymous ,

Slicers do not affect calculated tables, calculated tables has any other table in Power BI are persistent, so they only get recalculated when you do a refresh the semantic model.

What you need to do is a measure that allows you to do the calculations you need in this case you can use the same sintax on a variable in a measure and then do a SUM, COUNTROWS whatever is your need.

What are you tryinig to achieve with this table? How are you showing the visualization?

      Hi MFelix,
I am trying to show the score (GM_TOTAL BRAG) by period. When I tried to return the information from the main table then the column chart would not show any data when I inserted the score.
So I thought create a summarized table with the fields needed incluced TIMEFRAME which is the key.
Then the slicer did not work due to what you have mentioned.
I was thinking maybe include a FILTER in the summarised table dax that says if the slicer says PERIOD then TIMEFRAME within the summarised table would filter on PERIOD otherwise it would filter on YTD, but not sure if this would work or how to include that

  • Hii Anonymous

This happens because SUMMARIZE is creating a calculated table, which is evaluated only at model refresh time, not at query time. Slicers (PERIOD / YTD) do not affect calculated tables, so your column chart will never respond to the slicer. To make the slicer work, move the logic into a measure (using SUMX, CALCULATE, etc.) and use the original fact table in the visual, or create a proper dimension table + relationship for TIMEFRAME. Calculated tables are static; slicers only interact with measures and relationships.

  • Hi Anonymous ,

You created a calculated (summarized) table using summarize

Calculated tables are evaluated at model refresh time, not at report interaction time. Hence slicers don't have impact on ur summarized table.

But what you can do here is use original tables and thn create measure out of it it will. This way slicers does impact ur calculations.
