Uninstall and re installing the Power BI desktop worked for me to resolve this error!
Uninstall and re installing is the seluotion
I had the same issue—an unexpected problem without having made any changes myself. It’s quite frustrating, especially considering that we don’t always have the permissions to manage the installation and uninstallation of softwatre. After a long time, I finally managed to reconfigure it. Many thanks to those who provided the solution.
I hope the developers improve the quality of their updates.
Any specific notes from MS and PBI team on this 'bad release'
It may be somehting about the push from things like Tealium etc - however your org is pushing mandatory updates. Meh...
It works now, so hey lunch break over.
You can thank the Microsoft team for never quality testing their Power BI releases; this issue is related to the most recent update, and can confirm that you need to uninstall/reinstall.
At least it wasnt a crowdstrike kind of shut down. But yes, agreed.
With all this technology, AI and so on - you think bad version releases/control would be a thing of the past.
I feel like I deserve a cupcake because I raised this issue at like 1AM as I was working on QA and Synonms haha

Hi, @DungNguyen2512
If you have updated to the latest version of Power BI desktop and you are unable to open your report due to the current error, you can back up your PBIX file and then re-download and install it to open your report normally.

Hi,
Do the re-installing lead to data loss and effect our dashboard?
Sorry I just get used to PBI these days.
Also had the same issue - re-download & re-install of desktop did the trick. Possibly initial Aug release was defective, then quietly fixed and re-published...
Finally resolved it. Uninstall powerbi desktop. Re-install again. - This worked.
I had the same issue after I updated to 2.132.908.0 64-bit (August 2024).
Uninstalled and reinstalled and the issue went away.
Thanks for sharing
I am seeing the same error when I try to create a new report as well. It was all working until yesterday evening. Has there been any PowerBI updates?

Hi, @zkreyes
Based on the error information you provided, an error occurs when Power BI desktop connects to your data source and fetches data, Microsoft.PowerBI.ReportingServicesHost.ModelMetadataProvider occurs.
Power BI can't access your data because it can't access the data source. This issue can occur if the data source has been deleted, renamed, or moved, if the source is offline, or if the permissions have changed.
You can check your problem by following the following lines:
Create a new report in Power BI Desktop, and use the data source credentials that you used to access and load the data to determine if there is a problem with the data source credentials of the source table.
If you don't have issues with the data source credentials for the source report, try reducing the amount of data in the source report to see if that resolves the current issue.
In addition, you can troubleshoot software issues from cleaning up the Power BI desktop cache and reinstalling or updating your Power BI desktop.

def not the solution
Same issue here from today, also if I open a new empty report ... Just update the last PowerBI Desktop update (July 2024), I've tried to disconnect/reconnect the account and cleared the cache ... no luck 😞
Please try uninstalling and re-installing PowerBI desktop. This resolved the issue. The only thing that I could think of is, there has been a version update, which have issues.
