what I am trying to do is get the total of the averages into another column

You cannot measure a measure directly. Either materialize it first, or create a separate measure that implements the entire business logic.

 

What is your expected result, and why?

Great - now that you have documented the process you can implement it step by step in your measure.  Read about aggregation functions like SUMX.
