Splitting a column by delimeter to maintain all data

I have a 'tags' column which holds multiple varchar tags split by a colon. There can be 20 odd tags in the single field.

I split into columns by delimeter, using the colon, and Power Query returns two columns, thus ignoring 18 columns of potential data.

I can manually edit the code to force additional columns, which then contain the expected data.

When I split into rows, it maintains all relevant data but I want columns, not rows.
Why is it only automatically creating two columns, when there are multiple instances of the delimeter? And is there a way for me to ask it to perform properly?

  • There is a small setting change you have to adjust ...

Please refer to the following link:

    Split to columns

Pay attention that you can choose to split it into columns instead of rows.

    Hope that helps,

David-Ganor I did pay attention that I could split into columns, that is what I am doing. It only generates two columns, and limits the data to the first delimeter although I specified it look for each occurance of the delimeter.
