Sorting Matrix Columns by Measure Total

Is it possible to sort columns in a Power BI matrix visual by the total in descending/ascending order? I've noticed this option is available for rows, but not for columns.

I attempted to create a RANKX column in the Product table to use as a "Sort by Column," but it only updates during model refresh and isn't dynamic when applying slicer filters.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Hi mrbartuss ,

One not-so-simple way to do this is to replace all the columns in your matrix with measures.

    Best Regards

Thank you. Unfortunately it won't solve the issue as it is not dynamic - columns would need to be ordered manually. Additionally,  when filters change, the order might be different

    Hi mrbartuss ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community.

Power BI currently does not support dynamic sorting of matrix columns by measure totals. Sorting is only available for rows, not columns.

The workaround involving individual measures works in static scenarios, but as you've noted, it's not dynamic and doesn’t respond to slicers or filter changes.

    As an alternative, consider:

    • Swapping columns to rows, where dynamic sorting is supported.

    • Exploring custom visuals from AppSource that offer column-sorting capabilities.
