Skinny bars when I add a legend, how do I stop this?

Hi there,

When I add a legend to my bar chart, my bars go all skinny. All I want is for the colour to change. Is there some way I can prevent this, or in the least fix it?

As always, thank you
Michelle

Hi @michellepace ,

Not very clear but you could manage Data Color under Format.

Hi there,

Sorry to take such a while to reply. This is what I mean about skinny bars. As soon as I use a legend, I get skinny bars.

Question: I just want to colour each month by a different colour without my bars going skinny. Please tell me how I can do this? Here's my .pbix file here.

Thank you, Michelle

You posted awhile ago, but in case this could help you or others, here is a solution I have found.

  • If you select the stacked bars (circled in blue), you can put an item in your legend and it won't make the bars skinny. They end up touching side by side, but I personally think this looks better than the skinny bars 🙂

Skinny with regular bars:

Hope this helps!! I am so thankful for this forum!

When you switch to Stacked Bars though, you lose the "Outside End" position for the data values and are forced to show Data Values INSIDE the bars, which makes them disappear for small bars, so this doesn't really seem like a complete solution, if you want all your data values to display at least. any other ideas?

--- EDIT: someone else pointed out to me that you can turn on "Total Labels" in order to get the data values to appear on the Outside End when using a Stacked bar/column chart. Thanks to MFelix for that solution.
