Setting detail label background?

How exactly do I do this? The option is not under Detail Labels. Visual is the default pie chart.

I have a label smack down the middle which I can't make visible because of the detail label background defaulting to black.

  • Hi olimilo ,

In Power BI, the default background color for the data labels in a pie chart is black, which can make it difficult to see the labels if they overlap with the chart elements. To make the labels more visible, you can change the background color of the data labels or adjust the chart settings. Here's how you can do it:

    1. Select the pie chart visual in Power BI.
    2. In the "Visualizations" pane on the right side, expand the "Data labels" section.
    3. Under the "Color" property, click on the ellipsis (...) button to open the color picker.
    4. In the color picker, choose a contrasting color for the data labels that will be visible against the background. For example, you can select white or a lighter color.
    5. Apply the color selection, and the data labels should now have a new color that makes them more visible.

If changing the data label color alone doesn't solve the visibility issue, you can also adjust the chart settings to create more space for the labels. Here are two options:

    1. Increase the Chart Size: Resize the pie chart to make it larger, allowing more room for the data labels. You can grab the edges of the chart and drag them to expand its size.

    2. Adjust the Label Position: In the "Visualizations" pane, under the "Data labels" section, you can change the label position to "Outside" instead of "Inside." This will move the labels outside of the pie slices, providing more space for them to be displayed.

By combining these steps, you can improve the visibility of the data labels in your pie chart visual in Power BI.

  • Hi the issue here was that the background of a label in a pie chart cannot be changed, and it seems that in 2026 it is still not possible. I encountered the same issue and I could not find any option to change it, so I will have to do differently
